The arrival of the new Xbox Series X and Playstation 5 marks a very exciting time for gamers. With upgraded performance and countless new features, players are sure to have hours of fun to look forward to. If you know someone who’s lucky enough to own one the new powerhouses and want to surprise them this Christmas, accessories are always a great option. There’s plenty to choose from, so to give you a helping hand we’ve compiled a list of what we think are must-have items for next gen gamers.
Unless you have a truly fantastic (but chunky) surround system set up in your home, then a great headset is an absolute must for those looking to get the most out of their gaming experience. For PS5 players, we’d recommend the The SteelSeries Arctis 7P Wireless headset. These wireless headphones offer 24 hour battery life, crisp audio, ultra low-latency and a high quality microphone for online gamers.
Alternatively if you’re shopping for an Xbox player, then the The SteelSeries Arctis 9X Wireless headset is the way to go. It has all the great features of the 7P but is optimised for Xbox. At a slightly higher price point - they may even be better!
Sony and Microsoft have taken different approaches when it comes to powering their joypads. Sony opt for a built in rechargeable battery, whereas Microsoft seem to believe replaceable batteries are the way to go. No matter which side of the fence you fall, we can all agree that nobody wants to turn on their console to discover your joypad is out of power. Luckily there’s an easy to avoid this and that’s with charging docks.
If you’re buying for a Playstation 5 user, then the Dual Sense Charging Dock is easily the best pick. This is made in house by Sony and can charge up to two joypads at the same time. The dock can be hooked up to the console for power so doesn’t require any plug socket space. In terms of looks, this item has been designed by Sony to adopt the aesthetic of the Playstation 5 and looks great side by side. If you look closely, you’ll notice that it’s actually the same shape as a Playstation; which is pretty cool!
Microsoft's answer for joypad charging isn’t quite as elegant as Sony’s offering, but it certainly gets the job done! Rather than a charging dock, you’ll receive a rechargeable battery pack which can be charged by the console using USB-C. The biggest benefit of this is you can charge the joypad whilst you play, which makes it great for gamers who don’t want their session interrupted by low battery.
A second joypad is essential for those who enjoy a little offline multiplayer, plus it’s never a bad thing to have a backup in case the worse happens and something breaks.
Sony have chosen to break the mould with their new Dual Sense joypad and it seems to have paid off for them. Reviewers all around the globe have praised the new controller, specifically for its adaptive triggers and immersive haptic feedback. No PS5 owner will be disappointed with a second one siting in their living room, so if you’ve been thinking of buying one of these as a gift, then go ahead and pull that adaptive trigger.
“If it’s not broke, don’t fix it” seems to be Microsoft’s thoughts on the Xbox X series joypad. Not that anyone could blame them; it’s a great piece of gaming equipment! There is an alternative from the standard controller and whilst it’s a bit pricey, it does a lot of cool stuff that any serious gamer will massively appreciate (button mapping, custom analogue sticks, texture grips.. the list goes on). If you really want to treat someone then the Xbox Elite Controller is a solid choice.
Whilst gaming is at the heart of any console, they can also be your entire media centre. From watching Netflix or Disney+ to listening to your favourite artists on Spotify - it’s all possible using your console as a central hub. That’s where media remotes come in. Both Microsoft and Sony offer their own versions of a media remote and each does a great job enabling you to effortlessly navigate between your media apps and control playback.
In case you missed it, streaming gameplay tutorials and walkthroughs online has become extremely popular, both with content creators and viewers. Sony have definitely taken this into account when creating the Playstation 5 and their new HD camera is the result. Capable of capturing video in smooth 1080p and equipped with dual wide-angle lenses; this item is the perfect gift for gamers looking to broadcast their digital adventures online. The Playstation 5 built in software makes creating and sharing content extremely easy and even comes equipped with a green screen feature - which is pretty cool!
Sadly the new Xbox doesn’t seem to have a dedicated camera available just yet. This is most likely a direct cause of the negative feedback from fans about the Kinect camera. We won’t go into the details but it wasn’t a hit! That said, its still possible to hook-up a webcam to the Xbox Series X but we’d recommend giving the friendly team at PC World or Game a call for more advice on that.
We can’t wait to see what other new releases Sony and Microsoft reveal in the future, but for now you should have more than enough gift ideas for your favourite gamers - Just be sure to check which console they have first before you start shopping and you’ll be good to go!
