A weekly spotlight on the fabulous independent businesses who make Nottingham unique.
You’ve probably noticed the bright purple fronted shop off Old Market Square. Well, today we caught up with The Bead Shop Founder and Director, Hana. The shop, found on Market Street, stocks over 4000 products, and claims to be the UK’s friendliest bead shop (we’d vouch for that!). The Bead Shop has been selling beads and craft materials since 2000. It has a cafe that serves coffee not found anywhere else in the city (Split Screen Coffee). It has space for customers to create, fix, experiment with jewellery. It’s basically a one stop shop for your day out in Nottingham (but of course we’d recommend visiting the neighbouring businesses too)!
The Bead Shop specialise in designing and making their own craft kits & jewellery making kits. They stock big names, such as crystal beads and pendants from Swarovski, precision Japanese delica beads from Miyuki, Polymer clay to make your own beads and sculptures from Sculpey. Along with a wide range of semi-precious gemstones, plated and sterling silver findings and much more. Oh, and if you have bought half the shop on your visit, they have all the storage solutions you’ll need too.
Their creative workshops are a perfect introduction to learning to make your own jewellery. They cover a wide range of beading, silversmithing, wire work, macrame and more. They are held both in person in the Nottingham shop and virtually via Zoom. Workshops can also be held in local venues, ideal for team building and creative social events. They specialize in children’s beading parties and crafty hen do’s. You can even rent their fully kitted out workshop room to teach your own craft workshops.
Hana decided to start the business exactly how you would imagine; she loved making jewellery and wanted to be her own boss; so, like all small business owners, she made it happen. Hana has always lived in Nottingham and had planned to go to university here but ended up starting The Bead Shop instead. Now, in it’s 21st year, The Bead Shop has claimed its place as a Nottingham jewel.
Hi Hana, tell us about a great day at work in The Bead Shop:
"I love how every day is different. You never know what interesting old jewellery people will bring in for us to fix or amazing projects our customers want our help to create. My favourite days are the busy ones but where there’s still enough time to talk to customers and find out what they’re working on".
Tell us about your favourite product on offer:
"That’s a tricky one, we have 4000 products! I think probably our kits are my favourite, they’re designed & tested in house and are a great way for people to learn a new skill, from silversmithing to resin jewellery to beadweaving".
And, what’s your ideal day out in Nottingham like?
"If the weather is good, I love picking up some (bakery) treats from Tough Marys for a picnic in the Arboretum. If it’s a rainy day, I like to take my daughter to buy a graphic novel from Page 45 and then visit an indie cafe for lunch - often Kings Walk Kitchen followed by popping into Handmade Nottingham for a browse".
That sounds like a couple of lovely days out Hana. Come rain or shine, there’s things to do in our wonderful city! Thanks for your time today, we will pop by for a coffee soon!
