Ale Style Guide

New to the world of cask ale? This style guide by Magpie Brewery is a great way to get yourself acquainted with the different flavours and tastes.

British Pale and Golden Ales

  • Pale, blonde or golden in colour
  • Typically range from 3.5% to 5% strength
  • Easy drinking, moderate hop flavour.
  • Typically features American and New Zealand hops.
  • Try: Magpie Brewery - Hoppily Ever After 3.8% (Endeavour hops)

New World Pale and Golden Ales

  • Pale, blonde or golden in colour
  • Typically range from 3.5% to 5.8% strength
  • Hoppy and tropical flavour
  • Typically features American and New Zealand hops
  • Try: Magpie Brewery - Tread Lightly 4.9% (New Zealand Rakau hops)

Traditional Bitter

  • Brown, copper or ruby in colour
  • Typically range from 3.8% to 5% strength
  • Typically have a malty or biscuity taste with less hop flavour
  • Try: Magpie Brewery - Magpie Best 4.2%

Dark Beer

  • Black / dark in colour
  • Generally a Stout or Porter
  • A roasted, smoky, rich flavour
  • Typically range from 3.8% to 5.5.% strength
  • Try: Magpie Brewery - Raven Stout 4.4%
