National Random Act of Kindness Day

We all know how good it feels when we do that one selfless act, which in-turn helps someone else out, makes them feel good and puts a smile on their face. Well, on National Act of Kindness Day, we want everyone to get into the spirit of spreading a little joy and making someone’s day when they least expect it.

Spreading kindness comes in all shapes and sizes, plus it doesn’t even have to cost you anything – which is even better! That one act of kindness could be as easy as holding open the door for someone who has their hands full, or letting someone on the bus before you on your morning commute into the city – even if you are first in line. It could even be as simple as smiling at a stranger as you walk past them on your way to work. That one little smile could make their day if they are heading into the office to be greeted by a huge “to-do” list or a meeting they have been dreading all week.

If you want to get in on the “Act” – see what we did there – below is a list of further ideas as to what you can do to spread a little kindness: -

  • Take a colleague for a coffee
  • Make a round of drinks for people in your team
  • Leave a tip for the person serving you at a restaurant/café
  • Donate unwanted clothes
  • Ask someone how their day is going
  • Buy a loved one a bunch of flowers or something totally unexpecting on your lunch break – shop local and support an independent business
  • Send a message to a friend or family member telling them you appreciate them

If you did want to donate some unwanted clothes as an act of kindness, there are numerous charity shops across the city as well as clothes donation bins in various stores. If this all sounds a bit overwhelming, why not try the method recommended by Marie Kondo: Tidy by category, rather than location. Start by sorting through clothes, then move on to books, papers and, finally, sentimental items. So, what are you waiting for, get sorting out that closet and donate those unwanted preloved items which are taking up space.

To spread a little kindness of our own, we will be handing out FREE drinks vouchers on Thursday 17 February across the city. Everyone loves a brew whether it be tea, coffee or hot chocolate, therefore our friendly team of Street Ambassadors will be hitting the city armed with vouchers ready to hand out for the lucky recipients to enjoy a drink on us in one of Nottingham’s vast selection of cafes and coffee bars.

All you’ll need to do to redeem the voucher is pop along to the relevant coffee shop, order from the selected beverages and hand over the card as payment. Then sit back, relax and enjoy a drink courtesy of Nottingham BID.

So, what are you waiting for, National Act of Kindness day is Saturday 19th February, so get thinking about what you can do and who for. You could just make someone’s day!
