The Finalists For Nottingham’s Best Independent Business of 2018

From quirky cafes and chic bars, to sumptuous salons and unrivalled restaurants, the variety and quality of Nottingham’s independent businesses is second to none.

Over the past month, you have been voting hard to tell us who you believe is Nottingham’s Best Independent Business of 2018. We’re excited to say the votes are in, and the finalists have been announced! Drumroll please…



Broadway Cinema 

Keeping indie cinema large in Nottingham, this café, bar, cinema, learning centre and event space has kept Hockley’s heart beating for almost 40 years. Endorsed by the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Paul Smith, it's one of the city’s best loved success stories and will be no doubt be celebrating film for many years to come.

Hopkinsons Vintage, Antiques & Art Centre

A time warp in which to while away the hours, and unrivalled in range, this four storey vintage shop is home to forgotten treasures of our childhood, amazing vintage threads, and the oddest assortment of curiosities. Drop in to tune out the modern world and immerse yourself in another time.

The Lost City Adventure Golf 

A tropical world of fun deep below the Corner House, this adventure golf course is a sure bet for rainy days, birthday parties and leisurely afternoons when you want to do something outside of the norm.


Annie's Burger Shack 

Herbivores, carnivores, and all those in between can dine happily together on Annie's immense range of burgers, breakfasts and brews. Set in a beautifully revamped lace factory, this has become a staple of the Nottingham food scene that everyone needs to check out.   

Bar Iberico 

For holiday vibes in the heart of Hockley, it has to be Bar Iberico. With al-fresco dining and tapas to make passers-by drool with envy, Iberico is a hit day or night, whether you want an intimate dinner date or chilled lunch time meal.

Clean Cut Kitchen 

If you're on a health kick and the temptation of a Gregg's is getting to you, this place has your back. Delicious, healthy, and conveniently located at the bottom of Derby Road, their superfood menu will keep your body topped up with nutrients and your conscience clean as a whistle.


200 Degrees 

Intent on raising the calibre of coffee in Nottingham and afar, these guys have our caffeine cravings cracked in many of the city's best bars and can teach you how to brew like a barista. Plus, those A Boards are top of their game.

Fox Café 

Elegant decor and tables spilling onto the street are part of Fox Café’s charm, but the allure continues in their well thought out menu that ranges from vegan mezes to beautifully presented lunches. Located on Pelham Street, this is a perfect spot to enjoy a glass of wine and watch the world go by.

Ila’s Little Tea Shoppe

You can’t go wrong with a good cup of tea and nobody knows that better than Ila’s Little Tea Shoppe. We could just tell you to try the afternoon tea here and to be honest, it would be more than enough to impress. The friendly staff, inviting decor and welcoming atmosphere are what really give this place its charm though. Take a break on your next shopping trip and treat yourself to something special.

Wired Café Bar

Inspired by the urban style of London and Melbourne coffee houses, Wired has set the standard in Nottingham for a seriously well-made cup of coffee before most others. Despite fierce competition popping up since, their reputation persists, and their cool, colourful interiors make for a great place to eat, work and play.


Malt Cross 

Packed with historic charm, this stunning 19th century music hall has to be fully explored to be believed. Complete with caves, heritage tours, a charitable cafe bar and tonnes of smashing weekly events, need we say anymore?

Suede Bar 

This awesome Hockley bar offers entertainment aplenty and a cool atmosphere to soak in day or night. Enjoy live music, movie and quiz nights, and brilliant DJs each week, plus don't forget about their tempting pizzas which must be sampled!

Ye Olde Salutation Inn 

You want a dash of old school alternative music and great ale? The Sal is where it's at. Not only has this pub been serving up pints since the middle ages, but today they host gigs, events and rock nights.



While a certain big name brand might immediately pop into your head when you think of choosing your glasses, this family run opticians do it differently. Personable one-to-one service is their strong point, and with a smashing range of carefully curated international brands, they’ll find you a pair of specs you’ll want to wear day and night.

NKD Waxing

Waxing has never seemed more luxurious than at NKD, and you're sure to leave preened and pampered once their beauty therapists have had their way with you. With lots of friendly advice and some gorgeous products to try, you’ll be going home feeling like a whole new person.

Steele Hairdressing

Boasting a dedicated customer base, this hair salon based in Trinity Walk has generated a wonderful reputation over the years, with their friendly atmosphere applauded as much as their stylish snips.



Keeping the Notts lingo alive, Dukki is a souvenir shop that even the locals want a piece of. Top notch design and a spot on sense of humour, they know Nottingham like your nan with a 21st century twist, and are the go-to place if you’re looking for a little memento to celebrate your city.

Handmade Nottingham

Championing our city’s artists, this cute shop on St James’s Street is a creative hub for those who like all that is local, unique and beautiful. With seasonal markets where you can meet the makers, and a great range of one off jewellery, cards, textiles, and home accessories, drop in to buy some beautiful locally made items you won't find anywhere else.

The Tokenhouse

Christening, birthday, party, or wedding, The Tokenhouse have had us covered for the past 30 years or more. Picking the crème of the crop when it comes to their products, quaint and cool come together at this one stop gift and card shop that is a joy to browse around. 

Made In Nottingham

Think 'loft concept' design, think high end department store - the 'Made in Nottingham' brand brings together over 40 designers, makers and local businesses, that have all been inspired by the city of Nottingham itself.


Delilah Fine Foods 

Who can resist a place that sells dozens of cheeses, chutneys, wines and perfectly curated hampers? Growing from a small eatery in 2005 to a haven for foodies today, their artisan foods are packed with exquisite flavours and their passion for good products is clear.

Knit Nottingham

Crafty creatives flock to this hub of all things knittable in Nottingham. Not only stocking a fab range of yarn in its Trinity Walk store, they also host socials and workshops, making this a tight knit community (sorry!) that welcomes anyone curious about getting into the craft.

Some Kind of Nature

Taking 80s street style and hurtling it into the 21st century, this Nottingham brand know their style down to the bone. Retro futuristic meets practical chic in their intu Victoria Centre store, but we’re sure we’ll be seeing their name speeding into lookbooks and magazines internationally in no time.
