What’s your connection to Nottingham, and what do you love most about it?

I’ve called Nottingham home for the past ten years, having moved here in 2015 to study at NTU. Originally from Skegness - often jokingly referred to by locals as ‘Nottingham-on-Sea’ - I quickly fell in love with the city’s unique charm. My partner and I have now put down roots here, buying our first home, and we can’t imagine leaving.

Nottingham offers the perfect balance - bustling and vibrant yet never overwhelming. It has everything you’d expect from a big city, but still maintains a friendly, community feel. One of the things I love most is its proximity to nature; whether it’s a quick escape to the countryside or a weekend trip to the Peak District, it’s all within easy reach. The city itself has a European flair, with its trams, Old Market Square, and stunning Victorian architecture. But what truly makes Nottingham special for me is its incredible independent business scene, whether you’re exploring Derby Road, Sneinton Market, or the city centre, there’s always a unique shop, café, or bar to discover.

What’s your role at It’s in Nottingham, and how did you get into it?

I work as a Project Executive at It’s in Nottingham, where I manage and coordinate events and projects that bring the city to life, including the Ay-Up Market, the Halloween Festival, and the Christmas Market at Nottingham Castle. A huge part of my role involves working closely with Nottingham’s fantastic independent businesses, which is something I’m incredibly passionate about.

My background is in the heritage sector - I studied and trained in history, heritage, and nature-based projects before transitioning into event management. I love incorporating these interests into my work whenever I can. If there’s an opportunity to include Morris dancers in an event, you can bet I’ll make it happen!

What’s your favourite hidden gem in the city that visitors often overlook?

Whenever I have friends or family visiting, I love taking them to Six Richmond House, a stylish cocktail bar tucked away down Hurt’s Yard. It has a real intimate, speakeasy feel and serves some incredible drinks.

Other hidden gems worth seeking out include:

The Kean’s Head – a cosy pub in the Lace Market with a fantastic selection of ales and unexpectedly great curries.

Pizzamisu – the go-to spot for authentic Neapolitan pizza (trust me, it’s a game-changer).

Bromley House Library – one of Nottingham’s best-kept secrets. Founded in 1816, it’s a stunning membership-only library hidden behind an unassuming door on Angel Row. Stepping inside feels like entering a different world!
