9 Alternative New Year's Resolutions

Ahh January; a time to start fresh and finally make the most of that gym membership, get a new hair do' and drink kale smoothies right? 2018 needn't be the year of typical resolutions, as there's plenty of ways to make it a year to remember with some alternative (and achievable) goals for a fab year to come.

Spend More Time With Friends

You know what it's like when you work full time, have a strong social media game, kids to look after and barely enough time to sleep - friends can often take a back seat, and you keep arranging to see each other until eventually one of you gives up. Well make 2018 the year of friendship with so many great social venues to visit in Nottingham city centre. Book tickets for the latest blockbuster at The Cornerhouse, share a slice of the action at MOD Pizza or Oscar and Rosie's, hit the shops at intu Victoria centre with the girls and perhaps a pamper session and cocktail at The Beauty Temple for afters, or grab the guys and enjoy the race for the Premiership at Bierkeller, Cross Keys, Herbert Kilpin or The Loxley

Start a New Chapter and Read More!

How about taking a little more me time and throwing yourself into a good book, magazine, newspaper or comic? Lose yourself in so many great fiction, art, craft, food, comedy and celebrity reads at Waterstones, or take a stroll over to Cobden Chambers and discover amazing independent reads at Ideas on Paper. If comics and graphic novels are more your thing then you'll love Page 45 on Market Street, or if you're after some classic second hand finds then Books and Pieces in West End Arcade are on the right page.

Become a Local Coffee Connoisseur

You don't have to go very far in Nottingham city centre to come across an amazing cup of java, so why not espresso yourself through the medium of coffee and sample as many delights you can - whether as a pre-work treat or an afternoon coffee date with friends. We recommend visiting the winners of 2017's Best Nottingham Independent Business, The Specialty Coffee Shop on Friar Lane, as well as homegrown talent 200 degrees, Wired, Outpost and Dialling In. Discover more great coffee spots in our blog here.

Treat Yourself Once a Month

The most common reason for people 'failing' their New Year's resolutions is because they are unrealistic (and probably a little boring!) so why not treat yourself for achieving any goal in the new year? It could be as simple as the latest doughnut from Doughnotts when you nail that work presentation, a cosy coffee and brownie from Homemade Cafe when you conquer a small fear, some tasty fudge from The Treat Kitchen when you walk to work for a week, or a more extravagant purchase from intu Victoria Centre when you get that pay rise.

Start a Blog

There are so many amazing places to visit in Nottingham city centre so why not start writing about them? For example, we're a little bit obsessed with the amount of great cocktail venues, and we're weak before a foaming sparkly martini or anything containing prosecco, so why not put pen to paper and tell the world about Curious Manor, Tilt, Boilermaker and Brass Monkey? Or perhaps our great independents are more your thing - the world needs to know more about Studio Chocolate, Annie's Burger Shack, Cabella and Cafe Sobar

Use Your Phone Less

Now you may be reading this on your phone and we don't want you to stop looking at our great content online, but how about taking more of a break from all things digital and enjoy some great events and shows in Nottingham city centre. Enjoy great belly laughs with Chris Rock or see skating stars at Dancing On Ice at The Motorpoint Arena, great plays at Nottingham Playhouse or Thriller Live at The Royal Concert Hall. Or simply unplug and talk a walk around our great city scenery - window shopping anyone?

Change Your Style

There's no need for anything drastic, but adding a few new items to your wardrobe is a great way to change up your style without breaking the bank. Grab some great goodies from Primark, or get a new look at, erm, New Look. There's great fashion finds to be had at our great high street favourites, such as House of Fraser, John Lewis, Marks and Spencers and Debenhams, plus SuperDry, Burtons and many more!

Try New Food Each Week

Did you know there are over 250 places to eat and drink in Nottingham city centre? Which means there are so many venues just waiting to be sampled. Grab your friends and head to Bar Iberico for some delicious tapas in trendy Hockley, or give the vegan burgers at Annie's Burger Shack, as everything on the menu can be made veggie or vegan! Or head to intu Victoria Centre and try tasty delights from different independent vendors at Nottingham Street Food Club, who change their sellers every 3 weeks!
